What Happens If Your Car Fails?
A failed MOT isn't the end of the road — it simply means one or more items need attention before the car is legally roadworthy again. You'll get a written VT30 failure report listing every item, marked as either an advisory, a fail (major), or dangerous. What you do next, and what it costs, depends on the timing of your repair and retest.
Free Retest (Same Day, Repaired On-Site)
If your car fails and the same garage repairs it on the same day, most centres — including Autoclinics — offer a free retest. The tester simply re-checks the failed items rather than running the full test again.
Partial Retest (Within 10 Working Days)
If you take the car away to be repaired, whether at the same garage or elsewhere, and bring it back within 10 working days, you're entitled to a "partial retest" at a reduced fee — up to £27.43 for a Class 4 vehicle rather than the full £54.85. The tester only re-checks the items that failed originally, not the whole car.
Full Retest (After 10 Working Days)
Miss the 10-working-day window and the car needs a full MOT test again, at the full fee, covering every item — not just the ones that failed originally.
Can You Drive to a Retest?
This depends on the nature of the failure:
- Advisory only: the car has passed — you can drive as normal, but should get the advisory item looked at soon
- Major fault, MOT still valid: if your old MOT certificate hasn't expired yet, you can still drive legally until it does
- Major fault, MOT has expired: you can only drive to a pre-booked MOT appointment or to have repairs carried out — for any other journey you'd be driving illegally and uninsured
- Dangerous fault: the car must not be driven at all, under any circumstances, until it's repaired
Do You Have to Use the Same Garage for the Retest?
No — you're free to take your car anywhere for repairs and the retest, including a different test centre altogether. The reduced partial retest fee applies as long as you're within the 10-working-day window and bring your original failure document.
