What Is an MOT, Actually?

An MOT is an annual roadworthiness test, required by law for almost every vehicle over three years old in the UK. It checks that your car meets minimum safety and environmental standards — it is not a general service, and it doesn't check the engine's internal condition or mechanical health beyond what's needed for basic roadworthiness.

When Do You Need Your First One?

New vehicles don't need an MOT until three years after their original registration date. After that first test, an MOT is required every 12 months, for as long as the vehicle stays on the road — even if you barely drive it.

How to Book

You can book an MOT at any DVSA-approved test centre — you don't have to use a main dealer, and you don't need to go anywhere near where the car was bought. What Happens on the Day

1. Drop your car off at the agreed time — you don't need to wait with it, though you can if you'd like
2. A DVSA-qualified tester inspects the vehicle independently, checking around 60 items across the whole car
3. The test typically takes 45–60 minutes
4. You'll be told the result — pass, or a list of any failed and advisory items
5. If it fails, we'll call you with a clear, no-obligation quote before any repair work is carried out

What You Need to Bring

Nothing is legally required — the tester looks up your car by its registration number. It's still a good idea to bring your V5C logbook if you have any documentation-related questions, though it's not checked as part of the test itself.

What If It Fails?

Don't panic — MOT failures are common, and most are for minor, inexpensive items rather than serious mechanical problems. You'll receive a written report explaining exactly what needs attention, categorised as minor, major or dangerous (see our guide to defect categories). We'll quote for any necessary repairs before doing any work, and if we carry out the fix, your retest is free.

What Happens After You Pass

You'll receive a pass certificate (VT20), and the result is recorded automatically with the DVLA — there's no need to carry a paper copy in the car, though it's useful to keep for your records. Your next MOT will be due exactly 12 months from your test date (or from your previous expiry date, if you tested early).
