Do Electric Cars Need an MOT?
Yes. Despite having far fewer moving parts than a petrol or diesel car, fully electric vehicles still need an annual MOT once they reach three years old, exactly the same as any other car. The only exemption is for the first three years, and for a small number of specialist vehicles that don't require an MOT at all.
What's the Same as a Petrol or Diesel MOT
The vast majority of the test is identical regardless of what powers the car. Testers still check:
- Brakes, suspension and steering
- Tyres and wheels
- Lights, indicators and mirrors
- Seatbelts and general body condition
- Windscreen, wipers and washers
- Horn
What's Different for EVs
No Emissions Test
The most obvious difference is that a fully electric vehicle has no exhaust, so there's no emissions test to carry out. Hybrids that still have a combustion engine are tested on emissions in the same way as a conventional petrol or diesel car.
Regenerative Braking Checks
Many EVs use regenerative braking, which slows the car using the electric motor rather than the friction brakes alone. Testers are trained to check braking performance in a way that accounts for this, since a standard rolling-road brake test doesn't always reflect how an EV actually stops.
High-Voltage Safety
Testers check that high-voltage cabling and components are secure and undamaged, and that warning labels for high-voltage systems are present and legible. This is purely a visual and condition check — testers do not open up the battery pack or drivetrain.
Tyre Wear Patterns
EVs and hybrids are typically heavier than equivalent petrol cars, and deliver instant torque, which can accelerate tyre wear — particularly on the front axle. It's worth checking tread depth more regularly than you might on a conventional car.
Charge Level for Your Test
Make sure your EV or plug-in hybrid has enough charge to be driven onto the test ramp, moved around the workshop, and driven on a brake rolling road if needed. We'd recommend arriving with at least 20-30% charge to avoid any delays.
Common Hybrid & EV MOT Failures
In our experience, the areas most likely to catch out hybrid and EV owners are tyre wear (from the extra weight and torque), regular brake wear items like discs and pads (which can corrode from underuse if regenerative braking does most of the work), and washer fluid or wiper condition — the same basics that catch out any driver.
