MOT Prices Are Set by Law, Not by the Garage
Every MOT test centre in the UK, including here in High Wycombe, operates under fees capped by the DVSA. These aren't recommended prices ā they're the legal maximum a garage is allowed to charge for the test itself. Any centre charging more than the cap is breaking the rules.

Why Do Some Garages Charge Less?
The DVSA fee is a ceiling, not a fixed price ā garages are free to charge less, and many do, particularly as a way of attracting new customers for repair work. What you should be wary of is a garage that quotes a very low headline MOT price but then finds an unusually high number of "necessary" repairs. Always ask for a written quote before any repair work goes ahead.
What the MOT Fee Does and Doesn't Cover
- Covers the test itself, carried out by a DVSA-qualified tester
- Covers a free retest if minor items are fixed on-site the same day
- Does not cover the cost of any repairs needed to pass
- Does not include a service ā MOT and service are two separate jobs, though many garages offer combined bookings
Retest Fees Explained
If your car fails and needs repairs, what you pay for a retest depends on timing and where the work is done:
- Same day, repaired on-site: usually free
- Within 1ā10 working days, repaired elsewhere: a reduced "partial retest" fee, up to Ā£27.43 for a Class 4
- After 10 working days: full MOT fee applies again
