Checking Your MOT Expiry Date

You can check any UK vehicle's MOT status for free using the government's official vehicle check service at gov.uk. All you need is the registration number — no login or account required. It will show the current MOT expiry date, the mileage recorded at the last test, and the full history of past MOTs, including any advisories.

When Does a New Car First Need an MOT?

New vehicles don't need their first MOT until three years after registration. From that point on, an MOT is required every 12 months for as long as the vehicle is on the road, regardless of how little it's driven.

How Early Can You Book Your MOT?

You can book and take your MOT up to one calendar month (minus a day) before your current certificate expires, without losing any time on your new certificate. For example, if your MOT expires on the 20th of a month, you can test any time from the 21st of the previous month onwards, and your new certificate will still run a full 12 months from the old expiry date, not from the test date.

What Happens If Your MOT Expires?

Driving a vehicle that requires an MOT without a valid certificate is a criminal offence, and it also affects your insurance — most policies won't pay out for a claim on a car that legally should have, but doesn't have, a valid MOT. Penalties can include a fine of up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT.

Can You Drive to a Pre-Booked MOT with an Expired Certificate?

Yes — there's a specific legal exemption allowing you to drive a vehicle with an expired MOT to a pre-arranged test appointment, or to or from a garage for repair work related to the MOT, even though the certificate has lapsed. You cannot use this exemption for any other journey.

Setting a Reminder

The DVSA offers a free text or email reminder service that alerts you a month before your MOT is due. It's worth signing up for, particularly if your renewal date isn't an easy one to remember.
